Aquatics - Beginner Swimming Single Gender Female - PE.0212

The female only swim course will run in January 2011. This class is for those who are at ease in shallow water but are not safe in deep water and is designed to teach the non-swimmer the basics of swimming. There will be instruction on floating, gliding, kicking and elementary backstroke. Front crawl stroke will be introduced. Most instruction, particularly in the beginning, takes place in the shallow pool and later may progress to the deep pool as individuals progress.

Aquatics - SCUBA Diving - PE.0201

The fee for this course is $350. Note there is a $175 non-refundable deposit upon registering for this course. All classes are 7-10pm. In this class students will learn the practical skills to be a safe open-water SCUBA diver. Class is split into two parts; the why and how of SCUBA diving which involves classroom and pool training, and open water swims. Upon completion of the course students will receive a SCUBA Schools International (SSI) certification. More information can be found at http://www.uniteddivers.com/

Prerequisite: Must pass SCUBA pre-test on first day of class (200 yard swim and tread water for 10 minutes); must be 18 years of age. The fee for this course is $350. Note there is a $175 non-refundable deposit upon registering for this course.
Equipment: Course fee includes pool sessions, instruction, classroom meetings with all appropriate equipment, transportation and all other appropriate equipment. A mask, fins and a snorkel must be purchased for open water dives.

Note: there is a $50 non-refundable deposit unpon registering for this course. Three sections (beginner, advanced beginner and stroke technique) are offered from 4:00 pm-5:00pm. Beginners will receive instruction on floating, gliding, kicking and elementary backstroke. Front crawl stroke will be introduced. The intermediate course and the stroke technique course are designed increase a swimmer's confidence and refine skills in deep water and develop skills to pass the MIT swimming test. There will be instruction on the crawl, elementary backstroke, side stroke and breaststroke. Class ratio will be one instructor to every twelve students.

This challenging class teaches students mainstream level square dancing set to a wide range of modern music. The mainstream program consists of the first 69 calls, and is widely danced all over the world. Each week, students learn additional calls from the mainstream program which they then apply throughout the course. A group of eight dancers works together in this unique form of American dance. This challenging class teaches students plus level square dancing. Plus adds an additional 31 calls to the Mainstream program, and some increased difficulty. Plus is the program that we dance at the Tech Squares club. Each week, Students learn additional calls from the plus program, which they then apply throughout the class. Focus is on fast and rigorous learning, reaction time, and precision. Location changes: first class in Lobdell, the remaining Tuesday classes also at the Student Center. Thursday classes will be in 5-233.

Dance - Swing - PE.0317

For beginners with little to no experience in swing dance or for experienced dancers looking to perfect the basics, this course focuses on Lindy Hop: an energetic partner dance developed during the 1920's Harlem Renaissance. You will become comfortable with basic steps and footwork for 6-count and 8-count patterns, and will learn turns, lindy circles, swing-outs, charlestons, and other moves. Instruction focuses on the dynamics of the dance, musicality, and building a good frame and lead/follow connection with a partner. Learning swing will boost your confidence, balance, and coordination while giving you a good workout and putting a smile on your face. The goal is for you to complete the course feeling comfortable and confident on the dance floor.

Dance - Tango, Beginner - PE.0309

This is the original form of tango that developed in Argentina in the early 20th century. It is characterized by elegant leg movements, in combination with a still and quiet upper body. Argentine tango is an improvisational dance in the sense that dancers themselves link the elements, thus creating their unique dance through the connection between leader and follower. The focus of the class is on proper walking technique, posture, and figures that will enable the students to enjoy tango dance events (milongas). The class is suitable for complete beginners as well as more experienced dancers who wish to perfect the basics.

Building on basic concepts and connection between partners, we'll add in this class some new fancy moves that are suitable for social dancing (milongas). The leaders will practice their navigation skills and learn how to creatively combine elements by switching systems and sides of embrace. The followers will be challenged to a more subtle and attentive following while maintaining a clean footwork, clear lines, and adding some adornments. All participants must have completed a beginner course in Argentine tango.

This course involves a continued emphasis on handgun safety; one-handed shooting is refined, and students will also study rules, timing, and technique. Individual Sports - Self-Defense RAD - PE.0611

This 12-hour course provides basic information on personal safety, awareness, risk reduction and avoidance. RAD teaches practical defensive techniques that require no special skills. This is employed as women learn to be more aware of their surroundings. RAD also offers the opportunity to test these learned skills on a real person during a simulated attack. This class will improve students' style of skating, and students will learn a variety of figure skating moves, including forward and backward edges, mohawk and three turns, spirals, lunges, spins, and a variety of jumps (bunny hops, waltz jumps, toe-loops, mazurkas, salchows, etc.). Individual Sports - Triathlon - PE.0629

This course is designed to provide an introduction to beginners with a goal to complete a sprint triathlon (.5 mile swim, 12 mile bike, 3 mile run). Instruction will include open water swimming, biking (indoor), running, and transitions. Mondays are pool workouts and Wednesdays will be either on the Indoor Track or in the MAC court.

Prerequisite: Beginners only, swim 100 yards continuously

Martial Arts - Jiu-Jitsu - PE.0801

This course is an introduction to self-defense utilizing the American Jiu Jitsu system of self-defense. The types of techniques we practice include joint locks, throws, chokes, defense from stick and knife attacks, kicks, punches and much more. Jiu Jitsu can be utilized by people of any size and strength. Jiu Jitsu does not rely upon brute force, but instead utilizes anatomical knowledge and mental conditioning to control and subdue an attacker.

Tae Kwon Do is a Korean martial art. Students will learn to execute powerful hand strikes, blocks, and kicks. Practicing brings many benefits -- self-discipline, physical conditioning, reduced stress, self-knowledge, and respect. Classes are challenging -- each student is encouraged to push him- or herself to their limit, and then strive to move beyond. Classes will focus on callisthenic warm-ups, stretching, basic kicks and hand techniques, and learning the first Tae Kwon Do form (pattern of movements).
